The Department of Telecom has issued 13-digit mobile numbers to the telecom operators of India. But there is no need to get alarmed because your mobile number will remain unaffected as it will not change to 13 digit number. The letter that has been written by DoT to telecom companies mentions that the 13-digit numbers are only for M2M SIM cards.
These M2M or machine2machine SIM cards are used in automated machines and they are majorly used in machines that run on network connectivity. These machines could range between small gadgets to big machinery but the important thing required is Internet or mobile network connectivity for the basic functioning of the machines.
These are widely used for applications for example in smart homes, fleet management, traffic control, supply chain, wearable and many other things.
The rumours began because of the letter sent from DoT to ZTE and Nokia. In the letter, it has been mentioned that it has been decided that 13-digit M2M (Machine-to-machine) numbering plan will be executed from July 1, 2018. From July 1, all new M2M mobile connections will be assigned 13-digit numbers only. Even though it has been clearly mentioned that the change is for M2M, the word SIM cards and numbers have sent the warning for common people in India.
The DoT has notified the telecom companies to issue only 13-digit numbers for the M2M or machine2machine SIM cards. The new numbering plan will be seen to come into effect from July 31, 2018, and the new connections that will be given should be of 13-digit numbers. The existing M2M numbers can be migrated to 13-digits from October 1, 2018, and the deadline that has been decided for the entire migration is December 31, 2018. After the 13-digit numbers come into effect, India will be the country to have the longest mobile numbers excluding the country code. Currently, China is the only country which has the 11-digit mobile numbers.
Apart from this, the State-owned telecom operator BSNL has recently launched an upgraded prepaid pack that will offer benefits such as 6GB of data per day, unlimited on-net voice calls which will remain valid for a time period of 60 days. The important thing to note is that the 3G Data Special Tariff Voucher (STV) previously offered subscribers with 4GB of data per day and had the same validity.
Notably, the Rs. 444 STV doesn’t have any bundled unlimited off-net voice calling and also doesn’t have any SMS benefits. BSNL has reportedly upgraded other 3G Data STVs and also the prepaid unlimited combo packs to provide the subscribers with 2GB of additional data benefit per day. The 4G services of BSNL are currently available in the Kerala circle only
